DIY is a great way of making more of the materials on hand, or a great way to make previous furniture or household items more of your personal style. When creating, renovating, or working on DIY crafts, staying organized is very important. One way to achieve this is by keeping all arts and crafts materials neatly stored together and organized. This prevents clutter, increases workflow, and allows easy access to supplies when needed. Utilizing a self-storage facility can be an excellent solution! It provides greater space to store materials and can make it easier to stay organized. You can store and organize items to your preference, where they can be via category, project or even alphabetically. When using self storage, your arts and crafts become more accessible, can be stored safely and even protected from damage. Utilizing storage can free up much needed space in the home, garage or even the art studio. Our storage facility offers a customizable selection of units for you to choose from! Check out our website for more information on our units!

The Benefits of Self Storage for Arts and Crafts

Using self-storage can help keep larger tools, slabs of wood and concrete, or extra project supplies together in an organized manner. This is beneficial because it offers flexibility for future projects or renovations. By investing in an affordable local storage unit, you can keep your working environment clutter-free, while having all the necessary materials at your fingertips. For DIY enthusiasts, having all the necessary tools and supplies on hand is key to efficiently bringing ideas to life. Additionally, storing bulky and heavy tools in self-storage frees up valuable space in your home or garage, making it easier to stay organized and productive.

DIY Beginner Ideas

A few beginner ideas that can change the fate of your old furniture and wood scraps can be done by “flipping” these items. Which is a fancy word for renovating any item into a more modern and personable style. Below are two easy ideas: Wardrobe Furniture Flipping and Rustic Floating Shelves. They both are beginner friendly and can be completed in a short amount of time.

DIY Furniture Flip: Here’s an easy DIY furniture flip for a small wardrobe:

MATERIALS: Sandpaper, Primer, Paint, New Hardware (Knobs/Handles/Screws), Peel and Stick Wallpaper.

Step 1 is to prep the area and lay down plastic tarp. It is best to start with a clean area because it will make it much easier to manage and contain any mess that comes from the project. Make sure all materials are nearby and easy to access.

Step 2 is prepping the wardrobe and removing the hardware and doors from the wood. Either discard or keep the hardware aside to paint and polish.

Step 3 is to strip off the old paint. Apply paint stripper and allow to soak overnight, in the morning use a scraper and remove the excess. Sand down the wardrobe in preparation for the primer.

Step 4 Apply a coat of primer and allow it to dry for at least 4 hours. Add on wood stain or paint to a new color- whichever works better for you! Try a small area first if you are unsure. If you end up disliking the color, go ahead and begin stripping the area and sanding down again, until you like it. Allow to dry for 24 hours.

Step 5 is to update the hardware with new stylish ones that match the aesthetic you are looking for.

Step 6 is optional. Adding in a peel and stick wallpaper within the wardrobe can add an extra touch of personality to your new DIY project. Add the wallpaper on any internal shelves, the back of the wardrobe, on the sides of the drawers or wherever you feel it adds a nice touch.

Step 7, is to allow glue on peel and stick wallpaper to dry for at least 2 hours. Remove from DIY construction sites and clean up the area. Move to the desired location and enjoy!

The possibilities are endless and can revitalize your space! By painting with colors that make you feel happy, calm or energized it will make the piece even more special and unique to you.

After completing your DIY project, make sure to restock and return all of your items to your self storage unit. This will make it easier for you to access the materials again for the next project! Check out our list of storage units to fit your needs!

DIY Floating Shelves

Another great idea is to use scraps of wood to your advantage. Got a bland wall? Add some pretty floating shelves. As easy as it sounds, you can quickly add a new design to the walls of your home.

MATERIALS: Flat wood boards, sandpaper, paint or wood stain, wall brackets, screws, a level and a drill.

Step 1 is to cut the wood to your desired length. The best way to do this is via an electric wood cutter or a cordless circular saw. Make sure you cut your wood to the same lengths by using a ruler and a pencil to mark along the wood. Take all safety precautions before handling large machinery.

Step 2 is to sand down the wood with sandpaper.

Step 3 is priming and staining the wood. Although staining is not mandatory, it can add a more whole feeling to the wood and can be stained to match other pieces of furniture.

Step 4 is mounting brackets on the wall via brackets, screws and a drill. Use a pencil and ruler to mark the wall where you want the shelves to hang. Attach brackets to the wall and securely add the shelves on top. Once mounted, use a level to ensure your measurements are correct and it is not leaning to either side. Take all safety precautions before handling large machinery.

Step 5 is to clean up the area and make sure all large machinery is securely stored in a safe area, we recommend utilizing our self storage at Lake Monroe Storage
